The High School Musical phenomenon was born as a Disney Channel Original Movie, first broadcast in the US in January 2006 and in the UK in September 2006 and soon after that on the Disney Channel on DSTV in South Africa. High School Musical has been exported to more than 100 countries and been watched by over 100 million viewers. The winner of two Emmy Awards and a string of nominations caused the DVD sales to skyrocket in the first week, selling more 1.5 Million copies. High School Musical earned an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first TV movie to deliver nine concurrent singles on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
